Forts

The bank and ditch fortified homesteads of the Early Iron Age (c. 500 CE) evolved with time and increased resources into defensive stone walls, which themselves ultimately became complex multilevel forts, and then castles. There remain some 40,000 ringforts in Ireland, many reputed to be the homes of the fairies.
