From an information sign at the site: "It is even possible that all of the earthworks were built as the same time. The mound could have performed a yet-to-be understood functions within a large prehistoric or early historic enclosure. Alternatively, both mound and outer enclosure could have been built by de Courcy, although no comparable Anglo-Norman enclosure in Ireland has been identified."
